A six-month-old boy was admitted to the emergency room with perforated lungs resulting from complications associated with respiratory syncytial virus and pneumonia. He was diagnosed with Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Syndrome (SCID), a condition that hampers the body's ability to produce enough immune T-cells to combat disease. Concerned that bone marrow stem cells might overly attack the virus and exacerbate his condition, his doctor opted to transplant the baby with cord blood cells. Three months after the transplant, the baby was discharged from the hospital and is currently leading a healthy life.
